How welcoming are Asians to Blacks teaching English in their country?
I am considering working for the TEFL program and teaching English in either China or Taiwan next year. However, I know that Asian countries are some of the most homogenized demographics of anyplace in the world, nothing like the salad bowl of the U.S.A. Are Chinese and Taiwanese leery of Black people? One student I know, who is biracial, said it was more of a curiosity/stereotype-search thing than a malice (i.e. asking to touch her Afro, inquired if was a professional athlete, asking her to sing). I just want to know are there any Chinese/Taiwanese equivalents to the word n*gger and if so, do Black professionals overseas encounter much racism?
as a side note, I would hope not, because Asians who come to my college to teach Chinese and Arabic are treated with respect.
In Taiwan, you won't really see that sort of racism. International workers/teachers/faculty are generally treated with respect among educators.
Someone in the street might try to rip you off if they think you can't understand Chinese, but no one is going to target you specifically because you're Black. In Taiwan, foreigners usually come from all parts of the world: besides Caucasians, there are Indians and Indonesians. Basically any classification you will see will be 'Taiwanese' and then 'Foreigner' without any further breakdown. Foreigners are generally treated with curiosity, not hostility.
If there's any race that Taiwanese people really dislike, it is the mainlainder Chinese that go around declaring that Taiwan is part of the PRC
