How can we get the swelling down?
My grandpa was recently diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. He has a mass on his back pushing against his spine. As a result, he can't walk..at all. The most he can move his legs on his own is slightly lifting them up. Now, his feet and lower leg are swollen to 3x the original size. We are pretty sure it's because he isn't walking. So, my question: Is there anything we can do to help the circulation in his legs and get the swelling down? I brought over my water Foot Massager but I doubt it will fix the problem by itself. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
I would recommend elevating his legs on pillows (or a stool, etc) as high as he can tolerate. Also, TED stockings help with edema by distributing the fluid more evenly so it doesn't pool in the legs. You can probably find a pair of the stockings at your local drug store, or his doctor should be able to provide him with a pair. Make sure you are checking his feet daily because edema often causes loss of sensation. The last thing he needs is to develop an ulcer.
