what causes neck/shoulder pain when running?
i gave up body pump due to pain in my neck and shoulder. I have seen osteopath, sport massager physiotherapist, had accupuncture and it still bothers me.
On my doctors advice i gave up body pump due to weight of bar and started running instead but my neck bothers me more with the running!!
why is that ? I am 47 and of normal weight.
Sounds as though it may be a postural problem. When you run, if you don't maintain a good, upright posture, your shoulders will round forward and your head will lean forward. When you add the pounding of every step, you get pain from the joints being compressed.
First, ask someone to videotape you running. If you get pain immediately, then you can tape at whichever point you'd like. If you only get pain after running 10 minutes, then video at that point. Perhaps a running track or treadmill would be most appropriate.
Next, if you notice that your posture is poor and that you have a forward head lean, this is most likely your problem. The solution is to train your 'core' or your abdominal area and lower back. When you train your muscles to stabilize your abdominal/lower back/pelvis, then additional motions you place through this area, particularly with the pounding of running, the better you will be able to handle it.
