Why do Tibetan Buddhists focus on Maitreya rather than the present buddha?
In Buddhism, World Honored Future Buddha Maitreya is also respected and revered. But I once encountered a Tibetan Buddhist that said they focus exclusively to Maitreya. And I wondered, why do they focus on a long-stretched future (end of this world) instead of focusing on the cultivation to Bodhi at the present with the Buddha Shakyamuni that's ALREADY the Buddha/Fundamental Teacher of this world? i guess I just found it strange.
Falun DAFA - they're not a religion or proper practice. They take a snippit from all sorts of PROPER WAYS and just form their own. Until I see a Falun Dafa certification to Bodhi, then I'll say, "okay". But until then, from what I see, Falun Dafa just takes an already certified, proper WAY, and discontorts it into their own way for no good reason.
I really don't seek any answers from the Falun Dafa or cultist ways as such.
Personally, I can't say there is a greater devotion to or focus upon the forthcoming Buddha Maitreya in Tibetan Buddhism than to, say, the Five Dhyani-Buddhas, Green Tara, Vajrasattva, Chenresig, etc.
As His Holiness the Dalai Lama stated, "Relying on certain Mahayana Buddhist citations and quotations, we believe that in this fortunate aeon one thousand Buddhas will appear. This is the time of the fourth Buddha, Buddha Shakyamuni, whose teaching is still existing, and the fifth Buddha will be Maitreya Buddha."
It is believed in Buddhism that we are already in a period of steady decline of the Dharma as recorded in the sutras: that negativity and misfortune will continue to grow and finally the Buddha Shakyamuni's teachings will disappear. Eventually the future Buddha, the Buddha Maitreya, will appear to re-establish the Dharma and loving-kindness.
If anything, in my opinion, the focus is on anticipating a positive event that will occur after a period of austerity and doubt. I liken it to the excitement of Christmas to a young Christian child or the expected second coming of Christ to the Christian community.
