tibetan culture

Is Bran used in making Tsampa, the traditional tea of Tibetan monks?

I had heard that Tsampa used a coarse grain ground into a flour; it's sort of a watery gruel mixed with tea and considered very healthful. It is a veritable staple of Tibetan Buddhist religion and culture. Does anyone know if bran is used, or is it some other coarse flour?

It is roasted flour, usually barley flour (nas rtsam) and sometimes also wheat flour (gro rtsam) or rice flour (Tibetan bras rtsam). It is usually mixed with the salty Tibetan butter tea (bod cha).

It's actually quite 'doughy' - too much tea = 'mud tsampa' and too little tea = 'dust tsampa'
