How do I cover up/get rid of the scent of incense? And how do I tell my mother I am a Buddhist/Shintoist?
Yeah, I bought some incense but my stupid mom won't let me light it because "it's fire". So what's the best way to get rid of the scent?
My family is like....I don't know, very Lutheran I guess. Truthfully...I don't like my Lutheran family or Christianity itself. I really am a Buddhist/Shintoist and plan to stay that way. How do I tell my mother? And how do I officially change religions? Because I am baptized a Christian and am graduating Confirmation next year...
I think my mom already suspects that I am a Buddhist because I have a Buddha Statue, a prayer wheel, incense, some Buddhist quotes, The Eightfold Path, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and such. But how do I confirm it with my mother?
Oddly enough I converted from Lutheranism to Buddhism as well.
I would prep yourself for a discussion with your mother but know that you needn't panic if she does over what you believe. Instead, simply say that you are a Buddhist and that you don't want to attend confirmation. For whatever reason she might object, your reaction is easy:
She raised you to think for yourself and did a good job of it too. It's not out of disrespect for her, but respect for yourself.
As for the incense, respecting your mothers wishes if you live at home (I'm assuming you do as you are just going through confirmation) is more important than making an incense offering. You can use offering bowls in the mean time with just water in them (imagining your offerings as you pour the water). I have also just visualized my offerings when in places that I can't actually make them (on planes, hotel rooms, etc.).
